Evening Star Tabernacle M.B. Church

Church History

Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church was organized in August 1968 by the late Rev. Eugene Everett. The deacon board consisted of Deacon Thornton, Deacon Bevin and Deacon Fletcher, who served as chairman. The church began to grow from this point. God blessed Rev. Everett, his wife Valle and the congregation. Rev. Everett passed away from this life in May 1973. After his passing, Rev. J. E. Lee pastored the church for a short period and his ministry and the church were blessed.

In August 1973, Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church began a merger with Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church with the agreement of the membership of both churches. The unification of the members of two churches brought about the birth of a new church name: Evening Star Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor G. E. Edwards of St. Matthews M.B.C. presided over the merger ceremony in September 1973. Rev C. H. Sheppard was the pastor of the merged congregation.

Under the leadership of C. H. Sheppard a new church building was started and completed and the Lord blessed his ministry. Pastor Sheppard ordained Bro. Joe Fountain as a deacon and appointed him chairman of the Deacon Board as he was instrumental in the merging of the two congregations. Pastor Sheppard served faithfully until his health failed and he passed away from this life in 1987.

In September 1987, the church called Rev. Jerome Griffin as pastor. He and his wife, Mona have continued to serve faithfully since this time. In the years that he has served, his ministry has been and is being blessed by God. The congregation has grown spiritually, numerically and financially in a manner that can only be the work of the father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In 2016 a new fellowship hall was built and dedicated.

This is our church history!!
